Internal Family Systems® Workshop:

Couples Therapy

Larry Rosenberg, PhD

Join us for a special Internal Family Systems (IFS) workshop! This presentation will be an introduction to Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO), a model developed by Toni Herbine-Blank to use IFS for couples therapy. IFIO assumes that differentiation (of parts and Self within each person and between partners) is fundamental for healthy attachments, so that we can be with ourself while in connection with another.

Through a combination of lecture and experiential exercises, participants will learn how IFS informs the IFIO protocols with couples: tracking protector/exile patterns, unblending, individual work in the presence of one’s partner, and Self-led courageous communication between partners.

This workshop will be taught by Larry Rosenberg, PhD. Larry is a psychologist in Cambridge, offering consultation for therapy with individuals and couples.  He is a Lead Trainer for Toni Herbine-Blank’s couple therapy program, Intimacy from the Inside out, a Lecturer in Psychology at Harvard Medical School, and he has been supervising at Cambridge Health Alliance since 1989, currently involved with the PARTS research study.  While Larry takes an integrative perspective, drawing on psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and hypnotic models, IFS is his home base.  He has a particular interest in sexuality, helping therapists talk about sex with their clients, and the diversity of LGBTQIA+ persons.  Larry enjoys travel, baking desserts, the arts, especially psychological films.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand how one person’s system of parts interacts with the other person’s system of parts to create conflictual relationship patterns.

  2. Identify that protector parts use strategies to try to meet the needs of underlying exiles, often unsuccessfully.

  3. Recognize how one person’s protectors can blame and shame the other person.

  4. See the importance of the U-turn for unblending, whereby a person shifts their attention away from the partner to themself.

  5. Understand that in an effective couple’s conversation, the listener has the harder job.
